Rooms in College and Bikes

Below is a list of information about keep in expensive bikes in ones room if they are active member of the Cycling Club.

Note:- this is a list of what students have recommended, the Cycling Club does not recommend the braking of University or College Rules, you do so at your own risk.
In all cases below, there are a set of standard options that should be adopted.
  • Ask your bedder
  • Ask the porters
  • Ask your Tutor
  • Ask the Junior or Domestic Bursar If all else fails then One would recommend that you keep your bike in a bike bag under you bed.

    Christ's College

The only information that we have for Christ's College is that one should use the "ask the bedder method" (See below)

    Churchill College

See the Tutorial Bursar. Explain that you are a member of the University Cycling Club and that you have an expensive racing bike that will be kept in a "Professional bike bag", explain that there will be no damage and it there is you will pay for repairs. Keep your bedder and the Porters happy as they will see you with the bike. If questioned politely say that you have permission from the Tutorial Bursar.

    Corpus Christi College

As for as we know the no bike rule is enfored, this means that you could try the "ask the bedder" method, or to be more official see the Junior/tutorial bursar which ever one Corpus has.

    Darwin College

The "Ask the bedder" method and also it appears that you can gain permission to keep your bike in a bike bag, and also a turbo trainer if you can prove that the bike will never not be attached to it!!

    Downing College

If you are at Downing it appears that you are in luck, all you need to do is to ask permission from your tutor and as long as you are not in a "new" room you should be fine. However, if you're racing then special permission can even then be obtained as long as it kept in a bag (offical line) New is Howard court, L staircase, Singer building (grads) and Parkside (grads)

    Emmanuel College

    Fitzwilliam College

Information that we have is that is can be difficult, hence one should use the "Ask the bedder" method.

    Girton College

One should explain that it is a very expensive bike and that it will be carried though college and covered in the room. One should see the bedder and she/he will tell you who to see.

    Gonville and Caius College

Harvey Court - Get permission from the head porter to keep you bike in a lockable cupboard in Harvey court Porters Lodge. Houses - Permission is at the Discretion of the Landlady Old Court's - Permission from the Head Porter to keep the bike in either your room or in a lockable cupboard. (We are told that the bikeshed is not as secure as it looks.) Rose Crescent - As for the Old Court's

    King's College

Well this appears to be a wonderful college for bikes. Although you do not stand a chance to keep your bike in your room. As long as you are in college there is a secure Bike Shed, with CCTV, only members of the college have keys and the stands are inbedded in the floor. If you are in the terraces in Newnham or the Hostels on Tennis OCurt Road and Market hill, then things are not so rosey. For these one should ask in Warden, and if this gets nowhere that One would recommend that you keep it in the Colleg bike shed and ride in on your town bike and swap it in college, if this is possible.

    Magdalene College

    New Hall

    Newnham College

    Pembroke College

Permission is difficult and hence the method that should be used is to keep it in a bike bag in your room.

    Peterhouse

At Peterhouse you are in luck you can gain permission to keep your bike in your room as long as you keep tidy and clean etc.

    Queens' College

Not cyclist friendly, follow steps above.

    Robinson College

    No information

    St Catharine's College

One can not get permission from the Bursar, although you might like to try though the Head Porter. As such you might like to keep it in a bike bag and if asked it is sports equipment.

    St Edmund's College

    St John's College

About keeping bikes in rooms at Johns.... Just follow the standard proceedure, which is, 1. go to tutor, convince him that bike is expensive and needs to be kept inside. Points are scored for promising to keep it clean/in bike bag. 2. Then go to see the Domestic Bursar, who is the person you actually need permission from. 3. Hopefully, that's all you need to do.

    Selwyn College

Selwyn has a secure lock up shed just for expensive bikes provided that you can convice the Porters that you are a Serious cyclist. If you wish you could also try to get permission to keep it in your room from the Dean, and also the Domestic Supervisor.

    Sidney Sussex College

Appears that Sidney is not the place to be. Best to try and ask the bedders, but it appears that the Head Porter is not too keen on bikes in rooms. One could try to keep it in a bike bag.

    Trinity College

Okay, Trinity is not too bad, here is the method 1. Ask you bedder if she does not mind, explain that you will keep it out of the way, covered up and clean(keeping it behind something so that it can not be caught and hence fall helps) 2. If your bedder is happy next you need to see the House Keeper, (Both are very nice ladies), to get permission from them (depends on size of room etc.) 3. Get permission from the Junior Bursar, as long as you have permission from the House Keeper then you should be fine. If you see him in person he can be a bit intimidating but he is a loverly bloke really. This is best done well inadvance, if you are about to choose your room for the following year go and see the house keeper first and she will recommed places for you to get your room.

    Trinity Hall

Best not to ask permission from College hence "Ask the bedder" method should be adopted.

    Wolfson College

Not really very good for expensive bikes.
