MTB riding

MTBing within CUCC, despite Cambridge's pan-flat location, is very popular. Ever since 1991 MTBers have been churning across our local bridleways and byways or riding the twisty singletrack in Thetford Forest, the UKs largest lowland forest. We do however escape the confines of Cambridge at least twice a term - led by enthusiastic members of our committee and dedicated ex-members we leave our mark in Wales, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales - anywhere that offers a combination of top class riding and a good pub! Information on these trips follows below.

Racing is, as ever, a popular pursuit. In 2002, members of our club achieved top 10 places in the Kona 100 sequel, the Beast of the Brecons 100km in addition to having our 'A' team get 3rd place in the student category of the Red Bull Mountain Mayhem. It is now possible to win your half blues through MTBing.

Snowdonia, 18th and 19th October
The first MTB trip of the term will be to Ffridd Farm in southern Snowdonia. This location provides easy access to Coed-y-Brenin and the forest areas around Betws-y-Coed for 'groomed' marked singletrack as well the network of old drover's roads in and around the Rhinogs for more 'back-country' style riding. We will be staying in the bunkhouse at Ffridd farm which is at about 1000ft in elevation in some of the most scenic parts of the Snowdonia national park. Due to its elevation and exposed location, it can get quite cold, so it is essential that warm kit is brought with you! Details of an outline kit list can be found here along with our riding guidelines and safety policy. Typically we would ride on marked trails on the saturday to see how proficient people are before going into the back country on the Sunday (weather permitting). A well-maintained mountain bike is essential along with a basic to intermediate level of both handling skills and fitness. Typical distances would be about 20-25miles on both days.
