CUCC activity - end June/early July 2003

Here's a brief summary of what's been going on lately...

It didn't take long before Alex Higham produced his first Open time trial win. He caned everyone with a 1.51.43, a full 50 seconds ahead of the second-placed rider. Not bad for a first attempt at a 50. I did 1.57.03... cue excuses:

My alarm went at 2.30am to get down to the Chelmsford for a 5.21am start time. Turned up to find that due to roadworks the course is changed from the E72/50 to the slower E72/50b. Start now 3 miles from HQ... warming up I put a piece of glass through my front tub and had to take my shoes off and leg it to the start, about a mile away...

I arrived with 3 minutes before the off and managed to borrow a kind gentleman's touring wheel, complete with "wet weather" clincher. I didn't realise it was physically possible to fit so many spokes on the same wheel. But I managed to start on time, though I did forget to remove my warming-up jersey in the rush and I don't think the course change suited my 101 fixed. good training ride though...?!

The second of three Kona 100 mountain marathons was held in Builth Wells this weekend (6th July). Two of our riders Chris and Shane took part in what was almost perfect conditions (no rain!), a complete contrast to last year. Shane pulled in a finish in about 5hrs 20 and Chris in about 5hrs 45. More news when I get it.
