Keswick - Watendlath - Seatoller - Grange - Keswick
Category - off road
Length - approx 25 miles
This route starts and ends in Keswick and takes in some breathtaking views around Derwent water.
(1) Starting in Keswick (NY 265235), head southwards along the side of Derwent Water on the B5289. Take the first first left you come to at NY 268204 towards Watendlath. It's a fair climb up with some awesome views on the way - especially the viewpoint at NY 267188. When you reach the top of the road near the farm buildings, turn right in front of the right-hand farm building, over the bridge, and bear left up the track in front of you (NY 276164). Climb up this hill and enjoy the descent on the other side! When you reach the bottom you want to turn right at NY 263152 and continue along to the road.
(2) Turn left at the T-junction (NY 257149) and head towards Rosthwaite and Seatoller (B5289). Continue through Seatoller and climb up the pass in front of you. At the top of the pass, when you go over the cattle grid, turn right onto a bridleway (NY 235138). You need to follow this bridleway around the side of High Scawdell via Scaleclose Force(NY 244147). Continue along this bridleway (its easy to get lost, well, I did anyway…) to Borrowdale, joining the River Derwent at NY 251166. It's quite nice for a dip round here (if its sunny), the water is a tad chilly though…
(3) Continue along this track to Grange (NY 253175) and turn left here onto the road. Continue along here for a bit, and then join Allerdale Ramble at NY 251187, and skirt along the top of the forest. This bridleway joins the road at NY 247212. Go north along this road, and bear right at NY 246217. Continue along this road into Portinscale. Turn right at NY 256236 to the footbridge over the River Derwent. This joins the B5289, so finally turn right here into Keswick.
